U.S. Census Profile
Salt first attracted settlers to the Vanceburg area, which was easily reached by the landing at the confluence of Salt Lick Creek and the Ohio River. The town was established by Joseph Vance and Moses Baird, who as leader of the group named the settlement after his companion. The town thrived on salt production and mining. The only monument to Union soldiers killed in the Civil War south of the Mason Dixon line is located in Vanceburg. The 1937 flood, which devastated much of the Ohio Valley, washed away Vanceburg’s 1st Street and inundated the entire town. The streets were renamed after their order back from Front Street.
