In addition to reading the On-Water Safety Guide, a few key points:
Always wear a life-jacket with a whistle
Stay sober when swimming, paddling, or operating a boat.
Stay away from barges. They are quiet. Always check behind you for barge traffic, especially when crossing the main channel.
Stay off the water if there is lightening in your area.
Exercise extreme caution in limited visibility. If paddling between subset and sunrise, the law requires you to carry a bright handheld light for signaling and, if practical, red and green bow lights.
Paddle into oncoming waves and wake to avoid capsizing.
Most of the Ohio River’s shore is private property. Only camp in designated areas.
Note appropriate emergency contact info.
